How a Doula Serves
Your child depends on you for mothering, and even now as your baby grows you provide strength and nourishment from your own body. This is an amazing responsibility, and one that you are designed for.
You are also designed to love and be loved, to reach out and receive at the same time. While you are growing as a mother through this pregnancy, your endurance will be exercised and your heart will be stretched to allow more love to flow into and out again. While you grow with your baby, receive those around you who care for you; their love, affirmation, practical help and wisdom. |
When you add a doula to this circle of care, you add an ally. You gain a partner who believes in you and will go out of her way to help you make your success beautiful and momentous. A doula is knowledgeable about your body's changes and what it accomplishes when it is time to bring your baby into your arms. A doula is understanding of the emotions and questions that often accompany pregnancy and birth planning and is a listening ear that you can rely on. A doula is affirming and encouraging and will stand by you in everything.
In addition to being a reliable companion, a doula brings a unique set of skills into the birth team and circle of care:
- Knowledge of birth options and different models of care you can enlist for your labor and delivery.
- Experienced in comfort measures that you can use and techniques that your partner can provide for you during labor. - Familiarity with physiology, anatomy, and resources to help you learn about your body and your baby - An awareness of your labor progress as well as your needs, and an ability to adapt their care to you at all times. |
